Editing Outdoor Sports Photos Shot in Harsh Sunlight

Bright, direct sun is deceptively hard: blown highlights, black shadows, squinting athletes and oversaturated color. Here's how to bring those photos back in Lightroom.

1. Recover highlights first

Pull the highlights slider down hard (−40 to −80). If jerseys or skin are fully clipped, some detail is gone — but most RAW files have recoverable range.

2. Open the shadows

Lift shadows +30 to +60 so faces under hats and helmets aren't pure black. Watch for noise.

3. Tame the contrast curve

Harsh sun already adds contrast. Lower the contrast slider slightly and use a gentle tone curve instead.

4. Fix the color

Midday sun pushes everything cool and oversaturated. Warm the temperature slightly, drop overall saturation a touch, then bring skin tones and key colors back with HSL.

5. Or use a preset built for daylight

Basmi Dream handles all of this in one tap — it's tuned for bright outdoor fields, with rich greens and controlled highlights.

Prevention: shooting tips

  • Position yourself with the sun behind or beside you
  • Expose for the highlights, recover shadows in post
  • Shoot RAW for maximum recovery range
